This past week, yes, I said week because when you live in Hawaii you don’t just do a weekender to the mainland, was spent in the desert. It was both glorious and a test. Did I pass it? If you’re grading on a scale of gambling winnings, then I probably got a C-. But, if we’re talking in terms of keeping illness free, then I think it’s more like a B+/A-.
While I was exceptionally sober in a city full of drunks, I was by no means a prude. As (what I’d like to think of as) an actual adult, I turned away many a free cocktail, even keeping that up for our friend’s wedding and sticking to a two drink max for the festivities. While at first this did feel a bit unsatisfying (I do enjoy my free stuff) to sit at a slots machine and turn away what felt like endless cocktail waitresses, it did become a badge of honor and more fun to actually just talk to them when they’d inevitably ID me for that glass of water I’d ordered. I also tried to be careful. Careful with what I’d touch, eat, and do in hopes of not doing the typically system overload that frequently accompanies Vegas trips.
So instead of gambling all of our money away, we tried to vary it up. We hiked in the Spring Mountains, avoided going out much onto the Strip, and slept. Oh, we did. We generally just tried to make the whole adventure a relaxing and enjoyable experience not punctuated with too much sleeplessness and plenty of non-gambling activities, like paddleboarding on Lake Las Vegas. It was nice and I am truly pleased to have a husband who pushes me to move a little slower, frequently checks in on how I’m “really doing”, and puts up with the occasional grumpy/hot/hungry version of myself (who is not to be messed with). While we started our trip in the Mountains, we ended at a Lake and sandwiched some Strip time in-between. It was a nice mix and I’m so glad that the trip together was able to happen. Now back to continuing with healthy cautiousness back home and continuing lab improvements!
